In the toughest of times is when help arrives in the most surprising way. When we least expect it, a good Samaritan just might step in and save us.

Mandy Preston and her son Vaughn love bicycling. They were out one day when Vaughn fell ill, so they swung into a convenience store at Gillitts, South Africa.

They ran into a man named Tony, an attendant at the gas station. He perceptively noticed that Vaughn wasn’t feeling well and stepped in to help, his mom shared on Facebook.

“Within moments the attendant had him laughing and smiling.”

Mandy explained that this particular incident touched her heart. She said she has a profound amount of respect for those who are exceptionally kind to others like Tony was to Vaughn.

“Over the years I’ve tried to live like that and teach my child to do the same.”

Because Vaughn felt drawn to Tony, Mandy and her son regularly stop by and visit him at the station. No matter what he’s doing, Tony will stop and chat with him about their bicycles and the latest adventure they’ve embarked upon.

“(He) listens so obligingly to him as he chatters away.”

It took quite a bit of gumption, but Tony summoned up the courage to ask Mandy and Vaughn if they would keep an eye out for a reasonably priced bike. Vaughn promised he would look for one.

But Vaughn instead decided to raise the money himself to buy Tony a bike. One night, he approached his mom with the silver coins he’d been saving so they could take a holiday.

“(He) asked if I really wanted a holiday and upon asking why, he said he would rather put his savings toward helping Tony get his bike.”

Mandy and Vaughn took his piggy bank to a store called Game where he spent his savings on a bicycle for his buddy Tony. His generosity toward his new buddy Tony made this mom’s heart soar.

But the best part of it all was when they presented the bike to Tony…

“Our children make us proud on so many occasions but today my heart and his is so full of the joy at the kind man’s face as he, rather stunned accepted his gift from this 10-year-old boy.”

The response to Mandy’s Facebook post sharing their story with Tony has been unreal. Game, the store where Vaughn bought Tony’s bike, decided to help out.

“Vaughn had such ‘good game,’ we just had to get on board! So we’re giving Tony a Game voucher for the same value as his new bike! And of course we can’t forget about you Vaughn, so we’ll be sending one your way, too. Together we can make the world a better place.”

But the kindness pouring forth from strangers didn’t stop there. Luis Farias with the gas station where Tony workers reached out to Mandy and Tony.

He was grateful for the sweetness they had shown to Tony and, hearing of their story, decided to join the pay it forward movement.

“Dear Mandy and Vaughn, Your kind gesture and generosity is unmatched. We at Caltex Gillitts would like to thank you for your support and generosity and to show our appreciate, we would like to make Vaughn’s dream holiday come true and it’s on us.”

Mandy could not believe what the station had offered to do, nor could Vaughn. There truly are angels among us!
